Authorization -> Capture model
Capturing funds from LiveCart backend
LiveCart fully supports authorization + capture model with PayPal transactions. This allows to reserve the necessary amount of funds on customer's credit card when the order is submitted, but to actually charge (capture) the funds when the order is being shipped.
This provides additional flexibility - for example, PayPal allows to capture up to 115% of the reserved amount, which makes it possible for customer to make small changes/upgrades for the order before it is shipped - and without a need to make another payment! PayPal allows multiple captures per authorization, which is very helpful for orders involving multiple shipments - so you can capture funds as the orders are being shipped.
It is possible to capture and void transactions directly from LiveCart admin panel, so it won't be neccessary to go to PayPal site when you need to capture funds or void a transaction - this is fully integrated with the transaction management panel. The only part that is not implemented yet is refunding captured transactions, but this is scheduled for the upcoming releases.

Direct Payment
With Direct Payment, your customers enter their credit card information on your site, and you process the transaction in the background with PayPal's Direct Payment API. Your customers never leave your site, and they don't even know PayPal is involved in the transaction.

Express Checkout
PayPal Express Checkout provides fast and convenient way to PayPal users to complete checkout with a couple of clicks. They do not need to enter their payment and address information even if they're first time shoppers at your store - because all this information is already pre-entered at PayPal.

Website Payments Standard (IPN)
Website Payments Standard is the "classic" way of integration with PayPal. After completing the checkout at your store, customers are redirected to PayPal to make payment. When the payment is made, customer is redirected back to your store.
